Phurn ("we," "our," or "us") operates the Phurn mobile application and website. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our services.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and a password (stored securely using industry-standard hashing). In the future we may support sign-in with Google or Apple, in which case we will receive your name and email from those providers.

Style Preferences

If you complete the optional style quiz, we collect your preferred furniture styles, colors, materials, room types, and budget range. We use this information to personalize your discover feed and recommendations.

Usage Data

We collect information about how you interact with Phurn, including:

• Search queries — the natural language searches you perform, along with AI-parsed filters and result counts
• Discover signals — when you match (swipe right) or skip (swipe left) products in the discover feed
• Collections — the products you save and organize into collections
• Affiliate clicks — when you tap "View on [Brand]" to visit a retailer site

Device & Technical Data

We may collect device type, operating system, app version, and crash reports (via Sentry) to diagnose issues and improve performance.

2. How We Use Your Information

• Personalization — Your style preferences and discover signals are used to generate an embedding-based preference model that improves product recommendations over time.
• AI Search — Search queries are processed by a large language model (Claude Haiku) to extract structured filters and generate search embeddings. Queries are not used to train AI models.
• Product Recommendations — We use vector similarity on your preference embeddings to rank products in your discover feed.
• Service Operation — Account data is used for authentication, password resets, and subscription management.
• Analytics — Aggregated usage data helps us understand how people use Phurn so we can improve the product.

3. AI & Embeddings

Phurn uses AI in several ways. We believe in transparency about this:

• Search query parsing — Your search text is sent to Claude Haiku (via OpenRouter) to extract structured filters. These queries are processed in real-time and cached briefly for performance. They are not stored by the AI provider for training.
• Embeddings — We generate numerical vector representations (embeddings) of products and your preferences using OpenAI's text-embedding-3-small model. Embeddings are mathematical representations, not human-readable text.
• Preference learning — Your discover swipe signals update your preference embeddings using an exponential moving average. This happens entirely within our database — no external AI calls are made for swipes.

4. Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with:

• Service providers — Infrastructure partners (Supabase for database, Vercel for hosting, Sentry for error tracking) that process data on our behalf under contract.
• AI providers — Search queries are processed by OpenRouter (Claude Haiku) and OpenAI (embeddings). These providers do not retain your data for training.
• Retailers — When you click "View on [Brand]," you are redirected to the retailer's website. The retailer may collect data according to their own privacy policy. We may use affiliate links that identify Phurn as the referral source.

5. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored in a managed PostgreSQL database hosted by Supabase. Passwords are hashed using industry-standard algorithms. We use HTTPS for all data in transit. Session tokens on mobile are stored in secure device storage (expo-secure-store).

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data and preferences for as long as your account is active. Search history is retained to power the "recent searches" feature and may be periodically pruned. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data, including preferences, collections, search history, and discover signals.

7. Your Rights

You can:

• Access and update your account information and style preferences through the app
• Delete your account from the Profile screen, which removes all associated data
• Change your password through the app or via the forgot password flow

8. Children's Privacy

Phurn is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy in the app or on our website.
